Reply with quote | #31 | First let me apologize for missing the quotes in the earlier post. With the exception of the curfew law, I do agree with a lot of what you say. You didn't go that far off topic and it does explain why you have the opinions that you do. IMO it is because of the lack of common sense among many people that laws such as those mentioned have been passed. It is also because many people do not know how to parent that such laws are made. Like you, I get upset when a law is passed telling me how to parent...especially when the law is not as restrictive as I am. At times, my kids have tried, "Well the law says..." Then I (shades of my father) say, 'While you live under my roof, I AM the law.'
I don't know for a fact but I don't think that a court can or will rule on a proposed law...only one that has already been enacted. That is what the law director is for...to make sure it will or should pass muster.
Since you vehemently oppose the curfew law, have you contacted the ACLU about it?

I tell my kids the same thing you tell yours. And it's the same thing my old man told me and his him, and so on. And I agree with you that unfortunately there are people without common sense enough to make even the simplest of decisions(or correct decisions) for themselves. We've all seen it. And I can see your point in that alot of these people have children. A lot of kids are born into situations where they never have a chance coming out of the gate and wind up screw ups themselves. I get there are two sides to it. And you are right that, that is where alot of these laws come from. As for contacting the aclu- I think there would need to be a bigger outcry against the issue to get their attention which to be honest I haven't seen if there is. Besides that, the city has enough problems financially and litigously at the moment. The aclu has a tendency to make a mess out of situations at times. Despite the discussion here, which is just that-discussion-I think the city has bigger issues to deal with. I would hate for anything to further hamper the city in recovering from the mess it's in. So at the risk of being hypocritical in view of the discussion here, while I am against them, there are bigger problems. If the changes were more draconian like some cities have made in the past, then maybe. But personally I wouldn't want to be a part of slowing down or hurting this city righting itself. |

Oh... THAT'S what a Law Director is for! It's been so long, I had forgotten. |
